Position Summary:
Reporting to Executive Director, Advancement Operations, the Senior Financial Analyst, Advancement Analysis and Planning (AAP) will lead the AAP team and ensure overarching University Advancement (UA) performance tracking, value for money analyses, benchmarking and trend monitoring, coordination of cross-departmental analytics initiatives and governance reporting. Acting as senior subject-matter expert, they will support UA strategic planning exercises and will provide senior management with timely insights and recommendations regarding the continued performance of the unit.
Primary Responsibilities:
  • Leveraging senior professional expertise, design and implement evolving analytical reviews to ensure timely monitoring, analysis and reporting related to UA's overarching performance and alignment with its strategic plan.
  • Oversee the work of a Financial Analyst to ensure optimal impact and delivery on the mandate of the Advancement Analysis and Planning office.
  • Develop and evolve UA KPIs, monitor results and provide insightful, complex reports on related opportunities or risks.
  • Lead the coordination of cross-functional analytical initiatives such as the collection of data for benchmarking exercises, longitudinal trend analyses, forecasting of fundraising results. Provide a complex analytical review to ensure the accuracy and integrity of information presented.
  • Partner and collaborate with various business domains to complete value for money analyses. Provide recommendations and insights focused on optimal allocation of resources to ensure effective and efficient operations.
  • Prepare and present monthly, quarterly and yearly comprehensive reviews of UA key results including related management discussion and analysis.
  • Lead the governance reporting related to fundraising, engagement and operational results. Ensure timely delivery and provide accompanying analyses.
  • Provide expertise and participate in decision-making discussions related to the setting of overarching UA goals and KPIs.
  • Provide leadership in establishing best in class practices for the continued benchmarking of UA operations.
  • Act as a lead participant in the development of policies and procedures related to the collection and retention of information related to this domain.
  • Foster ongoing practices to ensure and enhance the accuracy of data related to this domain.
  • Keep informed of trends in advancement and actively seek and collect industry and peer data to gauge and benchmark the activities of UA therein.
  • Act as a leading member of UA's Analytics Centre of Excellence (ACE), the Analytics and Data Governance Steering Committee and other unit committees.
  • Design data visualizations, dashboards and reporting to support strategic and operational insights and decision making, related to the departmental sphere of activities and competencies. Interface with the Advancement Information Management unit to deliver these information consumption solutions.
  • Acting as a senior subject-matter expert, present findings or results to varied audiences including senior management.
  • Maintain appropriate levels of communication with all levels of the organization and across various business segments.
  • Act as change leader in the promotion of a data informed culture.
  • Develop and maintain cooperative and collaborative relationships with UA and McGill colleagues, acting as a trusted advisor and partner to the business. Foster strategic exchanges and relationships with peer organizations.
  • Perform other related duties as required.
Other Qualifying Skills and Abilities:
  • Bachelor of Commerce degree and a CPA designation. 8 years or more experience in financial analysis / professional practice or in a similar role. Experience working in a large organization is an asset.
  • Proven expertise in business analysis and financial modeling.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral.
  • High-level of accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively manage multiple analyses / projects in a timely manner and prioritize work. Proven experience performing detailed work; organized and autonomous.
  • Strong analytical skills and ability to collect, interpret and synthesize data sets from various sources.
  • Strategic and proactive business minded thinker.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and leadership abilities.
  • Capable of challenging the status-quo and adopting a collaborative approach to finding business solutions. Conscientious and thorough, with a concern for the quality of deliverables.
  • Excellent computer skills with proficiency in MS Excel, PowerPoint, Tableau or other data visualization tool.
  • Knowledge of French and English: McGill University is an English-language university where day to day duties may require English communication both verbally and in writing. The level of English required for this position has been assessed at a level 3-4 (qualifier) on a scale of 0-4.
