The Okanagan Indian Band is currently accepting applications for a Supported Child Development Worker at our Daycare.
The Supported Child Development Worker will value the contributions and needs of the parents and work in partnership with them in providing care and education. The Supported Child Development Worker will provide a quality caring and supportive childcare program to members of the community that addresses their unique childcare needs, meets all regulatory standards required by federal, provincial, and municipal governments, and operates within the Childcare Practitioner Occupational Standards and Code of Ethics as defined by the Canadian Childcare Federation.
Due to licensing requirements the incumbent must be at least 19 years of age.

WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR
You have education, experience, or carry a willingness to learn. You are community-minded, detail-oriented, and an excellent communicator.
Education
- Prefer Early Childhood Education certificate or Assistant Certificate or experience as an EA.
- A current First Aid Certificate
- Has experience working with young children with special needs.
- Has knowledge of the Okanagan culture and traditions.
- Class 5 drivers license and a reliable vehicle.
Experience
- Experience working with children under the age of six.
- Experience working with First Nations communities is an asset.
- Experience working with confidential information.
SUPPORTS NEEDED
- To assist in the planning and preparation of a program for the children based on the center’s philosophy and policies.
- To create a safe and secure environment
- To plan and implement a well-balanced program of activities for the special needs child/children assigned.
- To be inclusive of all children in their approach in dealing with special needs child/children
- Keep any required data or records of the assigned child/children with special needs.
- To guide other staff on the special needs and requirements of the assigned child/children
- Work with Supported Childcare, therapists and other professionals to meet the needs of the children.
- To treat each child with dignity, respect, love and care
- To retain the sensitivity of each child’s individual needs
- To use guidance techniques that are age-appropriate, fair and encourage socially acceptable behaviour.
- To adhere to The B.C. Childcare Licensing Regulations which prohibit the use of physical punishment, humiliation, physical restraint, isolation, deprivation of food, rest, toileting, or any other discipline methods that undermine the child’s self-esteem.
- To provide interaction with the children as a group and as required on an individual basis.
- To teach health and nutrition, rest habits and personal hygiene
- To maintain hygiene practices e.g. in toileting, hand washing, food handling
- To administer basic First Aid as required
- To assist with the supervision of indoor and outdoor play
- To maintain appropriate positive day-to-day liaison with parents of assigned child/children
- To encourage open communication concerning the needs and progress of assigned child/children with the parents
- To participate in the planning of special events, workshops, and meetings for parents
- Other duties as assigned.
Preference will be given to qualified Aboriginal applicants as per section 41 of the Human Rights Code.
A Criminal Record Check and 3 References are required.
