Job Summary
Lead a highly-skilled team to advance cutting edge veterinary diagnostic services
The Plant and Animal Health Branch supports the sustainability of animal and plant agriculture, while serving to protect the well-being of the people of the province through surveillance, regulatory compliance, risk assessment, and the development of strategies to address identified risks. The Plant and Animal Health Branch consists of three key programs: the Animal Health Centre, the Plant Health Unit, and the Business Unit.
The Animal Health Centre is accredited by the Standards Council of Canada to the ISO/IEC 17025 standard and is an American Association of Veterinary Laboratory Diagnosticians (AAVLD) accredited provincial veterinary diagnostic laboratory that provides comprehensive veterinary diagnostic services in order to protect the health of all animals in B.C. by supporting disease prevention, management and control strategies. The Centre protects human health with the timely and accurate diagnosis of zoonotic diseases that transmit from animals to humans, in both the public health and the food safety sectors. The Animal Health Centre supports the principles of One Health and provides a strong collaborative work environment with a focus on continuous learning and collegial support.
Reporting to the Animal Health Centre Director, the position is responsible for managing Veterinary Pathology Section and supervising veterinary pathologists. This position also provides expertise in the specialty area of veterinary diagnostic pathology.
Job Requirements:
  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine or equivalent.
  • Must be eligible for a public practice license from the College of Veterinarians of British Columbia (CVBC) or an equivalent Veterinary Licensing body in North America. The successful candidate must achieve an appropriate license to practice within 3 months of an offer of employment.
  • Formal postgraduate training to the Masters level in Veterinary Diagnostic Pathology with eligibility for Board certification with the American College of Veterinary Pathologists (ACVP).
  • Five (5) years of relevant experience in diagnostic Veterinary Pathology.
  • Two (2) or more years of demonstrated experience in a leadership and a supervisory role with similar responsibilities including assignment of work, development and evaluation of performance plans and professional development and continuous education plans.

Preference may be given to candidate with:
  • A Ph.D. in Veterinary Pathology and/or Board certification with the American College of Veterinary Pathologist (ACVP) or other recognized Veterinary Pathology certification granting body.
  • Six (6) or more years of relevant experience in diagnostic Veterinary Pathology.
  • Five (5) or more years of demonstrated experience in a leadership and a supervisory role with similar responsibilities including assignment of work, development and evaluation of performance plans and professional development and continuous education plans.
  • Experience working in an accredited (AAVLD or ISO/IEC 17025) veterinary diagnostic laboratory.
  • Veterinary practice experience, and/or familiarity with agricultural livestock production systems.

Willingness Statements & Provisos
  • Must obtain rabies vaccination upon employment (if not previously vaccinated) and required to participate in the rabies vaccination and titre program.
  • Meet safety standards of Work Safe BC.
  • Valid B.C. driver's licence.

About this Position:
Salary listed does not include the Veterinary Qualification Differential ($5000-$10000) and the additional 7% Overtime Shift Standby (OSS) provision that can be taken astaken as time off or salary on an annual basis which is on top offour (4)weeks annual leave.
In addition to the base salary for Professional Employee Association members, there is an allowance to cover professional fees, strong dental and medical plans and much more .
Flexible work options are available; this position may be able to work up to 1 day at home per week subject to an approved telework agreement.
An eligibility list may be established to fill future temporary and permanent vacancies.
Employees of the BC Public Service must be located in BC at the time of employment.
