The Ministry of Water, Land and Resource Stewardship (WLRS) is accountable for integrated land and natural resource management, including objective settings for land and marine environments, effectively managing cumulative effects, and advancing reconciliation with Indigenous peoples, environmental sustainability, and economic growth. This position is part of South Coast Region Resource Stewardship, in the Land Use Planning and Cumulative Effects Division of WLRS.
The South Coast Region's Strategic Land Use Unit provides support and strategic solutions to Resource Managers in BC's dense, diverse and ecologically rich South Coast Region. Regional Initiatives is a multi-disciplinary team that contributes to strategic solutions for Natural Resource Management in the South Coast Region. The team is responsive to changing needs of Government and the region and is responsible for the delivery of priority initiatives, including Land Use Planning, Decision Support Solutions and managing for Cumulative Effects.
Reporting to an excluded manager at the Business Leadership level, the Section Head is accountable for supervision of staff at the professional or specialist level. This position manages staff and financial resources, ensures achievement of and evaluates the outcomes of program goals and applies legislation, policies and professional standards. The Section Head leads projects and strategic initiatives to address large-scale and controversial issues within its geographic area.

Job Requirements:
  • Bachelor's Degree (or higher) in a natural resource management related field (e.g., Forestry, Geography, Biology, Zoology, Planning, Natural Resource Management or similar fields) PLUS minimum 5 years' experience working in a natural resource discipline.
  • Experience managing technical and/or professional staff in resource management or infrastructure development.
  • Experience in negotiating/mediating solutions.
  • Experience supervising, leading, coaching and mentoring staff

Preference may be given to candidates with one or more of the following:
  • Experience working for/with First Nations, or in First Nations consultation, collaboration and relationship building.
  • Experience and/or training in planning, particularly land use planning for natural resources.

About this Position:
Currently there is 1 permanent opportunity.
Flexible work options are available; this position may be able to work up to 4 days at home per week subject to an approved telework agreement.
