Job description

Position Description

The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine (UCVM), University of Calgary, invites applications for a Full-time Limited term position as Assistant Professor (Teaching) in Veterinary Anatomic Pathology for approximately 13 months. We are recruiting additional faculty to join our team as we expand our diagnostic services and our undergraduate class size.

Requirements:
The position will be at the rank of Assistant Professor (Teaching) and will have 90% of its time focused on diagnostics and teaching and 10% dedicated to service. UCVM's Diagnostic Services Unit (DSU) is located at the Spy Hill Campus and includes fully equipped anatomic pathology services and a bacteriology lab with serology and parasitology sections opening Fall 2023. The service sees approximately 2200 cases a year including a wide range of species. The successful candidate will work closely with the Director, Diagnostic Services Unit (DSU), the DSU Manager, and professional and technical staff to deliver expanded diagnostic testing in Alberta while also providing service to the broader veterinary community and contributing to the enhancement of teaching and research in the faculty.

Teaching will include clinical, didactic, and laboratory teaching of undergraduate students and interns. Developing a residency program is a goal and with that, training of residents would also be expected. Qualifications include a DVM (or equivalent) and advanced clinical training in veterinary anatomic pathology, with board certification or eligibility (ACVP or ECVP anatomic). Previous diagnostic experience is desirable. A graduate degree is considered an asset. The applicant must be licensed or immediately eligible for licensure in the Province of Alberta.

Appointments at the rank of Assistant Professor (Teaching) require evidence of successful undergraduate teaching abilities. The duties of an Assistant Professor (Teaching) will normally include, but not go beyond the scholarship required to maintain currency in pedagogy and content in the discipline.

UCVM has approximately 70 faculty members, 130 staff, 200 DVM students, 110 graduate students, 25 post-doctoral fellows, and 15 advanced clinical trainees. UCVM's DVM program provides a comprehensive general veterinary education to approximately 50 students per year, with an expected expansion to 100 students per year in 2025. The program is an integrated core-elective program, with enhanced educational opportunities in defined areas that combine discipline-based courses with extensive on-campus and off-campus experiential learning. UCVM is a research-intensive faculty with expanding research, graduate education, and advanced clinical trainee programs. Descriptions of the Faculty and its programs are found at www.vet.ucalgary.ca.

The University of Calgary has also established the Taylor Institute for Teaching and Learning to support the development of teaching excellence and scholarly activity. UCVM is in Calgary, a vibrant, multicultural city of 1,200,000 near the Rocky Mountains, Banff National Park, and Lake Louise. The University of Calgary is a research-intensive, comprehensive university that supports innovation in education, research, and service to the community.
