The Child and Family Services Division (CFSD) is responsible for service delivery of Child Intervention services (including Child Protection, Foster and Kinship Care, Adoptions, Post Adoption Registry, and support for sexually exploited and drug-endangered children) including supporting other Ministry divisions responsible for program delivery to other vulnerable children. One of the priorities of the CFS Division is providing training to and supporting the practice of all staff at Campus Based Treatment Centres (CBTC).

Role Responsibilities

Are you a self starter, with a passion for communication and Issues management? We are looking for a highly skilled Issues and Communications Coordinator to join our team and play a pivotal role in the ongoing operational coordination of divisional correspondence and support for the daily operations of the Communications and Issues Management Unit, and to support Alberta’s Campus Based Treatment Centres in achieving ministerial objectives.
Reporting to the Manager, Communications and Issue Management, the Issues and Communications coordinator, would concentrate on gaining experience in the functions of communications by working closely with senior communications professionals are the fundamental areas of focus.

Key responsibilities of this position include but are limited to:

  • In collaboration with the Communication and Issues Management Specialist provide communications writing support of information materials for both internal and external audiences.
  • Draft variety of other communication materials including content for the CBTC intranet site, speaking notes, bi-weekly newsletter, email and letter correspondence, presentations, reports and other publications.
  • Provide communications support to program areas across the CBTCs.
  • In collaboration with the Communications and Issues Management Specialist drafts communication plans and/or communications project plans
  • Coordinate graphic design and promotional material production as required ensuring government guidelines and standards are met.
  • Assist with arrangements for special events, stakeholder engagement, operational planning and displays or information booths.

Qualifications

Education and Experience: University graduation in a related field; no experience required; or equivalent as described below.

Note: For professional work related to Communications (e.g. Public Affairs Officer), a directly related diploma is considered equivalent to university graduation in a related field.
Equivalency:

Directly related experience or education considered on the basis of:

  • One year of experience for one year of education; or
  • One year of education for one year of experience.


Experience:

  • Strong research, writing, editing and proofreading skills
  • Ability to write a variety of communication products (speeches, new releases, advertising, articles, briefing notes, website content)
  • Knowledge of Canadian Press Style Guides
  • Understanding of issues management
  • Ability to be creative in writing and communications planning

  • Knowledge of Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy (FOIP) legislation, policies and procedures

Preferred:

  • Proficiency in using the Action Request Tracking System (ARTS) would be an asset.
  • Familiarity with Government of Alberta policy development process, government structure, operations, and decision-making processes.
  • Understanding of graphic design, video production/editing, and familiarity with Government of Alberta visual identity guidelines.
  • Experience in developing briefing materials for executive-level decision-makers.
  • Background in policy coordination and using project management and process improvement tools.
  • Experience working within Children and Family Services will be considered an asset.
  • Operating knowledge of communications technology and equipment, as well as experience with creative software (Adobe Creative Suite, etc.) would be an asset.
  • Critical thinking and solution-focused problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to alternatively work as team player with minimal supervision.
  • Comfortably leading and facilitating a group.
  • Experience planning and executing events would be an asset.
  • Knowledge of Canadian Press and Minister’s style guide for correspondence would be an asset.

This position is required to travel when needed.
