Role Responsibilities

Reynolds Alberta Museum has an exciting opportunity and is looking for a Coordinator, Exhibit Services and Collections Storage to join our team!

The Coordinator, Exhibit Services and Collections Storage provides professional technical services for the preservation, maintenance and interpretation of Alberta's rich cultural history at the Reynolds Museum. These services are provided in compliance with professional international museum standards and in fulfillment of the Museum's goals for preservation and presentation of Alberta's material culture.

Reporting to the Head, Collections and Display, the Coordinator, Exhibit Services and Collections Storage requires an advanced level of expertise, creativity, problem solving and independent judgment. This position requires knowledge of maintaining museum displays and the safe transportation and storage of large artifacts. A working knowledge in Western Canadian History and the subject areas of Transportation, Agriculture and Industry in Canada is an asset.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate Reynolds Museum exhibit maintenance, including the care and upkeep of interactive displays, dusting of artifacts on display and building and repairing artifact mounts for display, maintaining and adjusting lighting in galleries.
  • Provide technical and design expertise and coordinate the building of display mounts, gallery interactives, and AV kiosks.
  • Assist in the coordination of display installation and take down.
  • Liaise with the Coordinator of Warehousing and Transport to facilitate safe, museum specific transportation of artifact materials both on and off-site using a range of equipment and methods in meeting with professional standards and OH&S practices.
  • Use their technical expertise to inspect and maintain storage methods used on site to ensure the safety and preservation of all furnishings, fittings and equipment associated with the Reynolds Museum Collections Storage Facilities
  • Ensures compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, W.H.M.I.S. and other regulations. Keeps up to date on the act and its regulations.
  • Helps to coordinate the maintenance and repair of Government of Alberta heavy hauling fleet vehicles and trailers used by the Reynolds Museum and in consultation with management, recommends replacement vehicles and equipment that meet the needs of the museum.
  • Provides leadership by training, supervising and mentoring new staff, volunteers, contractors and clients as well as peer advisor services for site units, Heritage Division and the public.

This link will assist you with understanding competencies:

Qualifications

A university degree in Museum Studies or trades certification in relevant field plus three years demonstrated experience in exhibit production and/or audio-visual or metal or wood fabrication. Equivalencies will be considered.

  • A valid Alberta drivers licence class 5 and have the ability to obtain a class 1 licence.
  • Work experiences related to one of the team’s functions (such as carpentry, machining, welding, theatrical lighting, or set making) at a museum or art gallery will be seen as an asset.
  • Experience in using and maintaining various hand tools, power tools and lift equipment.
  • Ability to work at heights and lift heavy objects.
  • Working knowledge of computers, including the Microsoft operating system, and specific applications pertaining to scanning, vinyl printing, audio-visual applications, and electronic messaging.
  • Organization and prioritization skills to balance multiple ongoing projects at one time and be able to meet tight timelines.
  • This position requires availability to work the occasional weekend, evening and holiday.


Assets:

  • Knowledge and experience in audio-visual/digital technologies, fabricating, woodworking, machining, and painting.
  • Experience using forklifts and aerial lifts.
  • Knowledge of historical transportation, agricultural, industrial artifacts, and their maintenance requirements
  • Knowledge of budgeting, expenditure system, and revenue tracking.
  • Good understanding of the Occupational Health and Safety practices, F.O.I.P.P. legislation.
  • Able to demonstrate written and verbal communications skills, including the ability to clearly convey complex ideas in understandable terms to a variety of audiences.
  • Experience/the ability to work collaboratively
