Job Summary: Provide a high standard of maintenance, preventative maintenance programs, and janitorial services at both the Community Building and the Supportive Housing Building, following established standards, policies, and procedures and in keeping with the Building Code, Occupational Health and Safety, Fire Code, and Residential Tenancies Act, under the direction of the Partnerships and Operations Director. Coordinate with the Site Directors, Volunteer Supervisor, and Kitchen Manager to engage with other staff, volunteers, and Participants and delegate and supervise tasks as required.

Responsibilities:
Maintenance and Preventative Maintenance
- Monitor electrical, plumbing, security, safety, ventilation, and HVAC systems.
- Maintain facilities including buildings, sites, and equipment maintenance and improvements.
- Perform minor maintenance repair work in the following areas: plumbing, HVAC, carpentry, and painting as needed.
- Operate power and hand tools and equipment.
- Maintain grounds, including lawn maintenance and snow removal.
- Establish and execute a day-to-day regimen of cleaning and caretaking of facilities and grounds.
- Prepare vacant units for turnover.
- Schedule and oversee the above work performed by volunteers, staff, participants, and contractors, ensuring safe practices and best results.
- Coordinate maintenance supply purchases within a specific budget.
- Procure bids for large projects.
- Attend regularly scheduled staff meetings and professional development as required.
- Be available for on-call emergencies.
- Create new relationships with new mutually beneficial vendors, donors, and community partners.
- Act as a liaison with all vendors, including Waggs, Mid Ontario Disposal, Economy Chemical, Alpine, and other affiliated vendors.
- Manage a busy workload, handling heavy loads and repetitive tasks, both indoors and outdoors, as needed.
Reporting
- Maintain maintenance logs.
- Maintain a weather log for shoveling or plowing snow.
- Complete daily work orders and monthly board reports.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Minimum 5 years of maintenance experience in a community shelter or multi-residential environment, including hands-on and leadership roles.
- Relevant post-secondary education or trades certification or significant experience in a relevant technical field.
- Hands-on experience in maintaining, cleaning, and repairing buildings and grounds.
- Superior observational skills, troubleshooting ability, and excellent attention to detail coupled with common sense insight and practical application of basic repair techniques using a variety of hand and power tools.
- Knowledge of WHMIS and the use of appropriate cleaning and maintenance products.
- Experience in working and communicating with a diverse population, including supervising, leading, and directing others, as needed.
- English proficiency and strong communication skills, with a “safety first” attitude.
- Computer skills for ordering supplies, procuring bids for large projects, and completing reports.
- Must be physically fit to handle the necessary physical aspects of typical janitorial and maintenance work, including some heavy lifting and working both indoors and outdoors in all seasons.
- Excellent customer service, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
- Flexible and adaptable, with compassion and sensitivity to the issues related to poverty, homelessness, mental illness, addictions, and developmental disabilities, with a commitment to a discrimination-free environment.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

- Clean criminal record check, including vulnerable sector screening.
- Valid Ontario driver’s license, liability insurance, and access to a reliable vehicle.
