Operating Technician

Located in Loyalist, Ontario, the Kingston generating station stands as a pivotal power hub, boasting a capacity of at least 110 megawatts (MW). Operating as a combined cycle gas turbine plant, it efficiently harnesses natural gas to generate electricity, contributing significantly to the region's energy demands. Opportunity Summary

As essential members of the NAES team, you are responsible for the overall safe, reliable, and efficient operation of the power generating facility during your shift. You will rely on your extensive knowledge and experience in the operation of power generation or related industrial system equipment to provide hands-on responsibility for starting, stopping, and monitoring of all plant equipment. Your familiarity and use of Distributed Control System (DCS) equipment, condition monitoring tools and proven equipment inspection techniques will be a critical asset for success. As part of an O&M team you will be expected to contribute to the overall success by supporting, predicting, and completing preventative and corrective maintenance activities.

Primary Functions

• Operate and maintain power generation equipment and auxiliaries, including but not limited to water treatment, boilers, HRSG, gas turbine, steam turbine, breakers, valves, etc.
• Operate and monitor power generation equipment and processes using the Distributive Control System (DCS) to ensure optimal performance, efficiency, and safety standards.
• Complete routine maintenance tasks as assigned by the Operations Manager.
• Achieve the goals defined as part of the incentive compensation targets.
• Support the plant team in maintaining a high level of customer satisfaction.
• Assist Operations and Maintenance managers in developing and achieving O&M plan targets.
• Take an active role in supporting work at the facility, including collaboration with suppliers and contractors to complete tasks.
• Proactively identify areas for improvement and provide operational information and feedback in the planning process of major maintenance plans to support the development of long-range equipment plans.
• Manage an assigned system or area during planned maintenance outages to ensure necessary work is addressed.
• Take pride in ownership of tools used in daily activities and preventive maintenance work to retain their usefulness and value.
• Implement and manage safe work systems during shifts, including LOTO, confined space, hot work, and work authorization.
• Report any health, safety, or environmental non-compliance to management promptly.
• Understand inventory systems and procedures, participating in stocktaking when required.
• Understand the fundamentals of ARS (NERC) standards and complete training within specified timeframes.
• Properly apply purchasing guidelines when required.
• Utilize IT systems within the organization, demonstrating full competency with CMMS and document management systems for daily work and historical record-keeping.
• Provide information for internal and external reporting purposes in a timely and concise manner.
• Maintain site security by monitoring access to plant physical and cyber barriers and reporting any breaches in real-time.
• Maintain Logbook in accordance with OE 219/01.
• Foster community relations by embodying the NAES mission and values on a daily basis.
• Support the development of key performance indicators based on equipment knowledge, striving to achieve targets through innovation and continuous improvement.
• Support the development of risk management practices based on equipment history and maintenance findings.
• Maintain real-time communications with the IESO to ensure compliance with dispatch and system control.
• Report any non-conformances to management and issue Work Requests via CMMS.
• Perform other related duties as assigned by your manager.

Working Relationships

The Operations Technician reports to the Operations Manager and receives general direction from the Plant Manager.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

Power plant environment which entails working conditions that may include extreme hot or cold temperatures, confined spaces, working at extreme heights and on grating, and working around heavy equipment, pressurized, and energized equipment. Both indoor and outdoor work are part of the job requirements. Physical requirements include the possibility of standing for extended periods of time, stair and ladder climbing and lifting up to 20kg. Protective equipment must be worn in the performance of some duties (e.g., hard hats, safety glasses, air masks, ear protection, chemical suits, hot gloves, and high voltage protective equipment, etc.). Respirator qualified required. There are extensive smoking restrictions in and around the facility.

Fitness for Duty

All employees will participate in the Fitness for Duty Program. This program includes a post-offer physical examination and drug screening and post-employment random drug screening.

Work Schedule

This position entails a 12-hour rotating shift. Position requires extended working hours and varied shifts with the possibility of weekend and holiday work, as required by schedules, workload, and plant conditions. The successful candidate will be required to travel to all assets and vendor locations.

Job Qualifications

• Possession of a First or Second Class Inter-Provincial Power Engineering Certificate is required.
• Minimum of 5 years' operating experience in power generation or related large industrial facilities is necessary.
• Additional experience with machinery inspection or repair, as well as familiarity with control systems, is preferred.
• Knowledge of the types of equipment installed should be obtained through a combination of hands-on experience and formal training conducted either in the manufacturer's factory or on-site.
• Ability and demonstrated proficiency in safely operating hand tools, test equipment, and calibration appliances are essential.
• Capability to respond calmly and think clearly in emergency situations is vital.
• Visual ability to read and interpret computer-generated data, instrumentation, gauges, readouts, and color variations is required.
• Manual dexterity necessary to operate keyboards, pushbuttons, dials, valves, and mechanical actuating devices must be possessed.
• Ability to work off ladders, utilize aerial lifts, and maneuver up and down large, scaled equipment such as HRSG is necessary.
• Strong communication skills to collaborate effectively with colleagues are crucial.
• Advanced knowledge in electrical systems and experience in using Distributive Control Systems in the operation of a power generating facility are preferred.
• Must possess and maintain a valid Drivers License at all times.
