POSITION PURPOSE
Under the guidance and direction of senior staff, is responsible for providing technical operational support to the Roads Maintenance Districts and staff to ensure compliance of operational work practices with appropriate quality standards.

HOURLY RATE OF PAY: $18.46 - $26.85 (depends on year of study)
SCHEDULED SHIFTS: 0730 - 1530
WORK TERM DURATION: 4 or 8 months

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES
Road Maintenance Operation Technician Functions:
- Assists Divisional staff in providing technical support to the Roads Maintenance Districts to ensure the quality and quantity assurance of contracted work is in compliance with specifications
- Assists in maintaining, monitoring, and reporting on public complaints, road encroachment approvals and various municipal and agency related activities on the regional road system
- Assists in preparing and coordinating appropriate documentation relating to reconciliation of materials used by the work units and recovery of external funds for work performed by the Region stemming from accidents, work for outside agencies, developers, etc.
- Creates work orders for maintenance staff
- Assists in preparing and coordinating background data to assist and defend insurance related claims
- Performs minor contract inspections to ensure work is performed according to specifications
- Ensures that services provided meet Regional customer service standards
- Responds to inquiries from the public or contractors in accordance with Regional standards
- Assists in performing condition assessments on infrastructure and other related assets
- Assists in inspecting assets within accordance to MMS standards
- Assists in reviewing and inputting data related winter maintenance activities
Vehicle Operations:
- Required G license to operate motor vehicles while working for York Region, free of any demerit points
- The vehicle you can expect to operate is a light-duty pickup truck with two or four doors with an average length of 17.’-19’.
- Vehicles are equipped with flashing beacon and a motorized TC-12 Arrow board for additional safety
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Currently enrolled in a full-time post secondary Civil Engineering Program
- Requires a co-op, internship or placement in order to graduate
- Valid Ontario Class “G” driver’s license free of any demerit points
- Knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety Act and related workplace procedures including the Highway Traffic Act and the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices
- Knowledge of field survey equipment
- Knowledge of and demonstrated ability in corporate core competencies including customer service, communication, team work, initiative/self management and accountability, and flexibility/adaptability
- Computer literacy utilizing MS Office software applications
- Communication skills to correspond, create documents and to deal effectively with the general public over the phone and in person when handling complaints and/or requests
- Ability to work in a potentially stressful environment, to be alert, observant, patient and safety conscious as work is required in close proximity to high speed and heavy traffic roadways
- Ability to organize daily workload, set priorities and meet required deadlines
- Ability to work independently and work cooperatively with staff and as part of a team
- Ability to work outdoors, subject to extreme weather conditions
- Ability to read and interpret road construction drawings and applicable specifications
- Ability to work outside regular business hours as required
