Purpose and Role of Position:
Prepare well-balanced, home-cooked meals to residents on weekends and during absences of the full and Part Time Cook at Wellington and Clarke shelters.
Job Summary:
Work as a team to provide meals, as required, for residents of Anova. Involve the residents in all aspects of menu planning and preparation especially related to cultural preferences and food allergies. Order the food needed for the shelter.
Part-Time, 23 Hours/Week: Can work the 23 hours per week with a flexible schedule within the days of Monday-Saturday and between the hours of 9:00am to 6:00pm. Must have flexibility to work some hours on Saturday when needed.
Job Qualifications:
- Post-secondary training in food services and preparation
- Safe Food Handling Course
- Lifting required up to approximately 30 pounds
- Physical ability to stand and bend and stretch as required in the cook’s kitchen, the pantry and when food supplies are delivered for storage
- Minimum 1 year of experience of cooking in a congregate care setting

Job Responsibilities:
Responsibility: Meal Preparation
- Prepare well-balanced, nutritional meals (lunches, suppers, and snacks) for all residents ensuring that the food prepared meets the requirements of Canada’s Food Guide.
- Prepare meals for freezing, to be prepared for residents, by staff and volunteers on weekends.
- Reduce spoilage by preparing adequate food orders and the creative use of leftovers.

- Organize food storage area and maintain food inventories and purchases within the allowable budget range.
- Ensure the smooth operation of the residence in accordance with safety, fire and operational procedures, including security systems.
- Maintain and encourage good health habits and safety in the kitchen.
Responsibility: Health and Safety
- Follow through with responsibilities in accordance with Anova’s safety, fire and operational procedures
- Use appropriate PPE, safety equipment and clothing in accordance with policy and procedure.
- Recertify in Safe Food Handling every five years or as required by the Public Health Unit
- Responsibility: Resident Contact
- Communicate with the clients with regards to nutrition, cultural and dietary needs, safety and hygiene in the kitchen.
- Participate with the residents in the weekly menu planning.
- Perform within a feminist organization based on Anova’s vision, mission and beliefs.
Responsibility: Occasional Duties
- Work effectively with residents, staff, and volunteers
- Participate in training as required (WHMIS, AODA, Bill 168, First Aid, Non-Violent Crisis Intervention etc.)
- Prepare lunches and snacks for special occasions upon request
- Maintain strict confidentiality of all client information
- Participate in the training of new staff, students, and volunteers.
- Attend regular staff meetings, team meetings and training sessions as appropriate and/or required.
- Participate on agency committees as appropriate and/or required.
- Follow the guidelines and practices established for the organization
- Maintain accurate recording of all information on appropriate forms and keep files up to date
- Participate in the evaluation of service as required
- Respond to telephone requests for information and assistance
- Maintain a current awareness regarding woman abuse and issues related to women, and current data specific to Anova
