Position: Full-time Supported Independent Living Assistant (SIL Assistant)
Start date: April 2024
Salary: Based on L’Arche Canada’s Compensation Policy. Starting wage is $22.60 with room to negotiate based on previous experience, skills, and education.
Responsible To: SIL Coordinator
As a Supported Independent Living Program Assistant, you will empower individuals with developmental disabilities to safely and happily live independently. Based on the identified gifts and challenges of each person, you will participate in the design and implementation of an individualized program plan to support him/her. You will provide one-on-one support to assist each person to meet his/her goals in areas such as: banking, apartment maintenance, meal preparations, medical appointments, personal care, emotional growth, and participation in community life. This program is built on a vision of nurturing personal growth through friendship.
Location:
- Our members and their supports are located throughout the Community of Arnprior Ontario.
- SIL Assistants are scheduled for 40 hours per week including day, evening, and weekend times, and have two days away each week.
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
- Support members of our SIL program in various day to day life activities.
- Develop a positive, supportive, and mutual relationship with individuals with developmental disabilities through sharing daily life together, which respects their history, choices, goals and needs.
- Collaborate with team members to ensure that the physical, emotional, spiritual, vocational, recreational, health and safety needs of individuals with developmental disabilities are met while maximizing their choices and participation in the decisions affecting their lives.
Qualifications:
- Degree/Diploma in Community Rehabilitation and Disability Studies or related field
- Experience supporting individuals with developmental disabilities
- Ability to work independently and within a team
- Valid First Aid/CPR, is required
- Non-Violent Crisis Intervention (NVCI) or willingness to obtain
- Desire to understand and participate in the mission and vision of L’Arche
- Police Information Check (Vulnerable Sector Search) is required
- Fluent in spoken and written English and able to effectively articulate thoughts and ideas in a team setting
- Ability to directly address tensions in relationships
- Stamina and energy to meet the physical demands of the role (ie able to move/lift approximately 50lbs, be outside for extended periods, etc)
- Must have basic computer skills, able to use Microsoft Word and Outlook proficiently.
- A valid G driver’s license with 3 years insured claims free driving and at least 25 years of age to meet insurance requirements.
Particulars:
- 40 hours per week
- Shifts will include weekdays, weekends, daytime, and evening hours
