Shuswap Children’s Association, originally the Shuswap Exceptional Children’s Association, was founded in 1982 by a group of parents of children with support needs who found they were unable to access services for their children. They were joined by community professionals, service providers, and others who shared the goals of the parents.
Using the policies and procedures outlined by both Shuswap Children’s Association (SCA) and the Province of British Columbia, and reporting to the Community Support and Professional Development Coordinator, the Toy Librarian and Program Support Administrator oversees the day-to-day operation of the Toy Lending Library and assists in delivering child care services in the Shuswap area. As part of the CCRR team, this position focuses on promoting and supporting child care providers, parents seeking child care and other community early years educators. This position is also responsible for over seeing the day-to-day operations of the Shuswap Child Care Resource and Referral Toy Lending Library.
Job Responsibilities
Responsibilities to Child Care Providers
- Assist with registering and recruiting childcare providers in the Shuswap region.
- Assist with maintaining the childcare provider registry.
- Assist with providing support to both community based as well as home-based child care providers
Responsibilities to Families
- Assist with maintaining child care referral service for families seeking child care in the community
- Be the first to respond to child care referrals, walk-in clients and to provide assistance with Affordable Child Care Benefit applications
- Provide Ages and Stages Questionnaires and follow up when appropriate, including appropriate referral to other services
- Recognize and support the unique values and beliefs and needs of different cultural groups and provide culturally sensitive services that respect and support these factors
Community Responsibilities
- Raise awareness of the CCRR program through activities, events , and other avenues such as social media
- Assist with providing information on child care programs, Affordable Child Care Benefit, community events, child care issues, community resources to families, child care providers, and community partners

- Assist with planning and implementing training opportunities for child care providers, parents, and caregivers, including coordinating with other service providers to maximize impact, benefit and to be cost-effective
- Collaborate with community partners in healthy child development initiatives
- Perform the day-to-day operations of the CCRR Program, including all Toy Lending Library operations
- Provide access to Toy Lending Library Deliver/pick-up CCRR Toy Lending Library books, toys and equipment to/from child care providers
- Deliver CCRR services in the Shuswap communities, including, training and information, Affordable Child Benefit information, and parenting resources
- Oversee the day-to-day operation of the Toy Lending Library including maintaining the Toy Library database and online reserve system
- Maintain, purchase, market and promote the lending of books, toys and equipment to parents/caregivers living in the Shuswap region
- Use the Toy Library software to send overdue item emails, reverse items, etc.
Administration
- Under direction of the Community Support Program Coordinator, help implement the Child Care Resource and Referral Program in accordance with the philosophy and policies of the Shuswap Children’s Association and the provincial Child Care Resource and Referral Program
- Assist with regular evaluation of the CCRR program
- Assist in meeting all provincial and agency program reporting requirements
- Maintain a professional and creative attitude through job-related training
- Attend job related meetings, including Shuswap Children’s Association staff meetings
- Maintain books, toys, equipment, and resources in the Toy Lending Library, including entry into the cataloguing system
- Create and email all workshop certificates no later than one-week after the completion of the workshop/event
- Support other Shuswap Children’s Association Programs as needed
Special Responsibilities
- Assist with creating all workshop/event posters and posting the information on social media and Shuswap Children’s Association website.
- Assist with keeping social media up to date and addressing comments & questions that arise
- Assist with the promotion of all public workshops using various platforms including social media, SCA’s website and print applications
- Assist with compiling workshop feedback with all necessary expenses within two-weeks after workshop completion and share with CCRR staff and the Executive Director
- Create and circulate the a monthly CCRR newsletter

- Possess a comprehensive knowledge of services, programs, and resources available to families both in the community and elsewhere

Education, Training and Experience
- Certificate, diploma, or degree in Early Childhood Education, or equivalent combination and training for at least four years
- Experience/education in early childhood development, family dynamics, community resources and current government child care regulations
- A minimum of three years of experience working directly in the child care field
- Comprehensive knowledge of community resources and other support services available to children and families
- An understanding of current Community Care Licensing standards and regulations
- Knowledge of Ages and Stages Questionnaire is considered an asset
- Food Safe Certificate is considered an asset
- Understanding of basic financial procedures and budgeting is considered an asset
Requirements
- Valid Class V BC driver’s license
- Must be able to provide own transportation
- Current first-aid and CPR certification or willingness to take the next available class
- Criminal Record screening
- Updated vaccinations are highly encouraged
Hours of Work
- This is a part-time, working approximately 28 hours / week
- Hourly wage range is $22.71 – 27.60 (Grid 3). Starting wage will commensurate with experience
