Job description

The Training and Development Assistant will use their passion for planning, skill development and effective communication by supporting the implementation of training for the team. They will provide support for the program by coordinating with the management team and community partners to provide virtual and in-person development opportunities.


** This is a full-time contract position, from June 2024 to August 2024 (9 weeks).

Schedule to be Monday to Friday, generally days and afternoons (on-site).

37.5 hours per week. Details are pending funding approval. **

This position is funded by the Canadian Government Canada Summer Jobs program which requires that the following eligibility criteria be met:


Eligibility:

1. Be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of the employment contract;

2. Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment; and,

3. Have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations.

4. International students are not eligible participants. International students include anyone who is temporarily in Canada for studies and who is not a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person who has been granted refugee status in Canada.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Works as a team member to provide training coordination support for the team
  • Supports a group environment that promotes and expects positive team culture
  • Supports content creation for Training and Development materials, which may involve reviewing and editing existing or new materials
  • Documents monthly participation and evaluates outcomes; analyzes results and prepares recommendations
  • Participates in initial training, ongoing staff development and supervision
  • Maintains proper safety standards in regards to the health of participants in all programs
  • Ensures that the training documents are up to date and well maintained
  • Other duties as assigned


Skills Experience:

  • Experience and understanding working with vulnerable and marginalized communities
  • Understanding trauma informed practice when supporting team members who are working with individuals with mental illness
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office required
  • Exemplary oral and written communication skills
  • Aptitude for accurate and efficient computer data entry
  • Ability to work effectively with people from various abilities, life situations and cultural backgrounds
  • Excellent project, timelines and deadline management skills
  • Knowledge of local community agencies and resources is an asset
  • Strong organizational and computer skills, ability to work under pressure and manage multiple tasks and deadlines are required
  • Participate in working with partners in community consultation and community leadership development initiatives, taking a lead role when appropriate
  • Build solid and fruitful relationships with community partners and agencies to increase opportunities for innovation and positively impact outcomes
  • Must be enrolled in diploma or degree program for Health Sciences, Planning, Environmental, Social Services; or related field
  • Some knowledge of housing and homelessness with a passion to support those experiencing low income and/or poverty and enthusiasm for preventing and reducing the related effects
  • Experience developing, facilitating, or evaluating training would be an asset
  • Experience working within a non-profit and/or social services environment would be an asset
  • Commitment to a strength-based approach to supporting people
  • Exemplary written and oral communication skills
  • Understanding trauma informed practice when supporting team members who are working with individuals with mental illness
  • Commitment to understand and uphold the mission and values of House of Friendship is expected
  • Exemplary emotional intelligence, resilience, communication, conflict management and problem solving skills required
  • Ability to work professionally as a team member with staff, participants and community members
  • Experience or strong interest in working with diverse populations including people from various cultural backgrounds, income levels, and sensitivity to their needs
  • Experience planning recreational/social events and activities
  • Experience with and commitment to using an anti-racism, anti-oppressive and trauma informed approach to consultation, program design, evaluations of processes and service delivery
  • Must be dependable, professional, flexible, a team player, and have a positive attitude
  • Respectful, supportive and engaging approach to persons with physical and/or cognitive disabilities, addictions, mental illness and other life challenges
  • Excellent project, timeline and deadline management skills including skills in logistics, planning and detailed record keeping


Compensation:

o We use a 3.5:1 ratio meaning that the highest paid team member is not paid more than 3.5 times than the lowest paid team member


Rate of Pay:

At House of Friendship all compensation ranges are categorized under a series of “grades” and we base our payment structure on internal equity. When determining rate of pay, a candidate’s past related experience will be taken into consideration along with where others with similar experience are currently on the pay grid. Note: Due to the internal composition of our pay grids, many team members with lengthy experience are between the start and mid-point of the range and therefore most new team members will be placed similarly.


Grade: 3

Min: $19.61

Mid: $20.80

Max: $23.28


Working Conditions:

  • 37.5 hours per week, generally daytime, weekday hours
  • Encountering participants at program sites who may be under the influence of alcohol or other drugs, and/or experiencing symptoms of mental illness can be expected
