POSITION SUMMARY:
Reporting to the Lead Operator/Utilities Coordinator, the Utilities Operator Trainee is responsible for the operations and maintenance of the County Water and Wastewater Facilities, Distribution and Collection Systems. A strong mechanical aptitude is required. The Utilities Operator Trainee must be comfortable working with technology, including Microsoft operating systems, Microsoft Office applications, plant SCADA software, and GPS / GIS systems. The Utilities Operator Trainee must ensure that all applicable municipal policies and bylaws, provincial legislation and federal legislation are adhered to.
SPECIFIC ACCOUNTABILITIES:
- General maintenance and operations in the County’s Class III Water Treatment Plant (WT).
- Class II Water Distribution systems (WD).
- Class I Wastewater Collection systems (WWC) and Wastewater Treatment Lagoons (WWT).
- Adhere to all County Health and Safety policies.
- Ability to schedule and prioritize assigned tasks and complete same in a safe and timely manner and work with minimum supervision.
QUALIFICATIONS/EXPERIENCE:
- High School Diploma or hold a General Equivalency Diploma.
- Must take the Alberta Environment “Entry Level Training” course and write the Level I Certification exams in all four categories: WT, WD, WWC, and WWT.
- Valid Class 5 Alberta Driver’s License with positive driving record.
- Excellent time management and organizational skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong attention to detail required.
- Ability to work independently and exercise sound judgement, discretion, tact, and confidentiality always.
- A positive record of working effectively with appointed and elected officials and the general public.
- Familiar with Microsoft operating systems, Microsoft Office applications, plant SCADA software and County GPS and GIS systems.
- Experience with Health and Safety committees and their policies.
- Willingness to take training as required.
WORKING CONDITIONS & PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT:
- Medium to heavy physical effort in relation to the season; occasional light-moderate lifting.
- Extensive use of computers and related equipment.
- Use and operation of a vehicle.
- Substantial traveling on Provincial and County paved highways and rural gravel roads, often in adverse weather conditions.
- Occasional environmental exposure to weather conditions, rough terrain.

- All personnel working at Northern Sunrise County are governed by the County’s Health and Safety Policy and are eligible to be a member of the Health and Safety Committee.
- Ensures all operations are conducted in a safe manner and in accordance with County Policies and Occupational Health and Safety Regulations.
