About the Role

Under the direction of the Director of Community Services, the Education and Capacity Development Coordinator will assist K'ómoks First Nation members in achieving their education goals by providing excellent services, relevant information, up to date resources, encouragement, acknowledgement and direction. This role is responsible for advocating for the wellbeing, safety and security of indigenous persons navigating public and private educational systems. This position assists to facilitate the achievement of K'ómoks strategic plan goals and objectives through the effective and timely delivery of organizational programs and services.

What you will be doing

  • Developing and implementing an annual workplan that aligns with the K'ómoks Strategic Plan
  • Working collaboratively to ensure an indigenous lens exists within the public school system
  • Engaging in policy development and liaising with community members, school districts and decision makers to advocate for wellbeing, safety and security
  • Sponsoring students in their pursuit of post-secondary Education and providing counsel as necessary
  • Managing the annual budget with regards to applying for grants and bursaries, reviewing data and providing reports
  • Attending meetings, sitting in on education councils, and working collaboratively to develop policies
  • Contributing general communications, information and resources related to K'ómoks First Nation member Education and training, such as newsletters and community events
  • Managing the KFN tutoring program
  • Administering funding for school supplies, student support programs, incentives, and grad clothing/fees
  • Overseeing the funding and reporting for the annual summer student employment program
  • Paying tuition to School District 71 (SD71) for all nominal roll students
  • Preparing sponsorship letters to school and administering living allowances for funded students
  • Keeping accurate, up to date records of all students and ensuring regular updates and communication with students
  • Maintaining and Implementing the Local Education Agreement (LEA) alongside SD71
  • Participating on and liaising with education related boards, committees, and institutions, such as: Indigenous Education Council, North Island College Aboriginal Advisory, and the First Nations Education Steering Committee Board of Directors
  • Other duties and tasks as assigned.

What you will need

  • Post-secondary Education and/or training in the field of Administration, Education or Human Services is an asset
  • A combination of education/training and work experience is an asset
  • Experience working in and with the Indigenous community preferred
  • Community-centric, with the ability to work in a team environment
  • Ability to manage and coordinate community programs or services
  • Strong planning, prioritizing, multitasking, and time management skills
  • Ability to display tact, respect and diplomacy
  • Sound judgment and decision-making
  • Ability to foster meaningful relationships and exercise compassion
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to manage and coordinate community programs or services
  • Ability to manage budgets/record keep and collaborate on policy development
  • Computer literacy in Microsoft Office and Adobe

Working Conditions

  • This will be a full-time, permanent, in-office position.
