Geospatial Data Specialist

Job Summary:

 

Reporting to the Geoscience Lead, the Geospatial Data Specialist is responsible for driving Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Geospatial Data management at NewRange Copper Nickel. The role includes engaging across the breadth of the NewRange team to design, implement and maintain efficient and robust data and information management solutions across the project (2D, 3D and 4D geoscience, community, environmental, mining, tailings, engineering, hydrology and hydrogeology, cultural and heritage including archaeological, infrastructure, facilities, financial and administrative, general survey, and real-time information) and to generate geospatial products, maps and insights from the data.

 

The ideal candidate will be competent with industry-leading GIS and database applications, has a working knowledge of information and file management procedures and guidelines, has experience with making applications, maps and datasets for a range of audiences, and will facilitate continuous improvement and innovations in acquisition, storage, management, access, integration, and analysis of a wide range of spatial and time series data. The candidate should demonstrate a basic understanding of technical elements of NewRange Nickel Copper’s business to ensure that data and information systems are optimized. A proven ability to collaborate with and contribute to high performing multidisciplinary teams is crucial, as well as maintaining strong relationships across similar disciplines within and outside of NewRange Copper Nickel.

Overview:

 

Located in the historic iron range mining region of northeastern Minnesota, NewRange is a 50:50 joint venture of subsidiaries of Teck and Glencore that is advancing two major copper-nickel-platinum-palladium deposits, NorthMet and Mesaba. Project activities range from readying the feasibility stage NorthMet project for a production decision pending clearance of mine permits to advancing the nearby Mesaba project to pre-feasibility studies and permitting. NewRange is committed to unlocking a new domestic supply chain of critical metals for the transition to a low-carbon economy and positioning Minnesota as a world leader in sustainable mineral resource development.

Responsibilities:

 

  • Be a courageous safety leader, leading by example and fostering a proactive safety and sustainability culture based on the common values on health, safety, environment, and communities shared by the asset owners.
  • Contribute to and support a data management strategy, procedures, workflows, and standards, with the goal of improving organization, accessibility, security, and quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) of existing and new multi-discipline data.
  • Administer an ArcGIS Online system for NewRange Copper Nickel, maintaining data/metadata standards and naming conventions, production and maintenance of web maps, web applications, and static maps.  Maintain system and database health, license allocation, and addressing issues as they arise.
  • Administer and maintain databases for geoscience (acQuire), environmental, and community data.
  • Support design and implementation of data management and integration workflows, queries, automated on-line technical and business reporting, and other methods of providing content to users in a sustainable and scalable manner from multiple data types and sources including a variety of technical data, information and content types such as: GIS, IoT sensors,  maps, geologic sections, photos/videos, vector models, remote sensing data, satellite imagery, environmental and social baseline, virtual reality, electronic and hardcopy files and content from various functional areas including permitting, environment, social/community, engineering, land tenure, administration, and commercial, etc.
  • Collaborate with office, field, and operations-based employees to understand business objectives and to provide guidance and advice for the efficient, appropriate, and cost-effective management of project information throughout its lifecycle.
  • Support implementation of new data capture tools as appropriate, leveraging mobile and cloud solutions where possible and appropriate to facilitate real-time integrated data driven decision making.
  • Perform quality assurance on generated results to enforce data integrity and ensure metadata and spatial data standards are maintained.
  • Keep abreast on innovative solutions in data and content management in the industry and within NewRange Copper Nickel; make recommendations for continuous improvement opportunities in existing data and information related systems.
  • Provide training and mentorship to project staff of all disciplines, including geoscience and field technician, environmental, community, health and safety, commercial, and administration to ensure proper use of tools, software and content management procedures.
  • Foster a culture of open communication and relationship building across the organization, as well as with external and internal partners, and invest in developing talent within the organization by providing recognition, challenge, and mentorship.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications:

 

  • Bachelor of Science in an Earth-, Environmental-, Physical- or Geo- science discipline and/or specialized certification in GIS. A post-graduate degree is considered an asset.
  • Minimum of 8 years of experience in in GIS and database applications at an advanced level. Specific experience in the resource industry would be an asset.
  • Experience and proficiency with SQL databases is required (implementation, management, querying). Knowledge of python scripting is preferred.
  • Excellent communication (both written and verbal) and interpersonal skills are required. Demonstrated ability to work effectively within diverse teams.
  • Able to work with minimal supervision; results orientated with excellent organizational, planning, prioritization, problem solving and execution skills.
  • Specific software suite skill sets preferred for the role are:
    • Experience with ESRI’s Arc Enterprise systems is strongly preferred including implementation and management of ESRI spatial data environments and related tools (e.g ArcMap, ArcPro, Portal, ArcGIS online).
    • Knowledge of mobile field collection platforms including ArcGIS Collector, Field maps and Survey123.
    • Proficiency in acQuire & Arena. An acQuire Practitioner (ACQ2000) certification or higher is preferred.
    • Experience in data analytical and dashboarding programs including Power BI and ArcGIS Insights.
    • Experience with spatial data querying and processing, especially within the ESRI environment.
    • Experience with FME (server and desktop) for spatial file conversion and automation tasks.
    • Experience and skills in other relevant GIS and 3D software (e.g. Leapfrog, Imago, ioGas) is beneficial.
    • Proficiency with Office 365 tools is required.
  • Experience with GIS mobile data acquisition and integration; experience with supporting general hardware and software requirements and needs in an exploration, development, and operating environment.
