Position: Health & Safety Advisor

Reports To: Senior Manager, Field Safety

Location: Bobcaygeon, ONT.

In partnership with our Superintendents, the Health & Safety Advisor will provide safety leadership and guidance in the execution of NPL Canada’s (NPLC) health and safety programs.

Responsibilities:

· Promote incident prevention activities and influence a positive workplace culture of safety

· Evaluate NPLC’s workplace behaviours, practices and conditions to identify actual and potential hazards; make recommendations to eliminate the hazard or preventative measures to ensure that adequate controls are introduced and implemented.

  • Work closely with Operations and site management to ensure corporate safety initiatives are aligned and executed in order to meet or exceed corporate and site-specific safety performance goals
  • Provide H&S training to employees and safety orientation to contractors, clients and visitors and maintain training records
  • Conduct frequent audits of established EHS field documents to ensure their ongoing effectiveness and compliance
  • Review NPLC’s EHS Management System to identify the need for new and/or modified safety programs
  • Evaluate employee safety behaviour and performance to ensure current training programs are effective
  • Conduct frequent work site inspections, observing conditions and work practices; make recommendations, champion change and recognize positive achievements/behaviours
  • Lead root cause incident investigation analysis for incidents and near miss events; assist in the development and implementation of corrective actions with stakeholders
  • Participate and actively support the JHSC activities

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • The ability to build and foster collaborative relationships by developing, maintaining and strengthening partnerships inside and outside of the organization
  • The ability to take responsibility for one’s own performance by setting clear goals and expectations, tracking progress against goals, ensuring feedback, and addressing performance problems and challenges promptly
  • The ability to demonstrate and promote safe and ethical behaviour through the establishment and adherence to policies, procedures and professional standards of conduct
  • The ability to define standards for services/work processes and manage activities and people in a manner that affectively achieves those standards
  • The ability to conduct and/or lead root cause analysis. This entails the ability to clarify a situation, seek information from appropriate sources and skillfully pose questions to draw out pertinent information
  • Effective communication skills including the ability to express oneself clearly in conversations and interactions with others; the ability to convey concepts and information in business writing; and the ability to plan and deliver communications/presentations that impact and/or persuade the intended audience
  • The ability to anticipate the implications and consequences of situations and take appropriate action; to be prepared for possible contingencies

Qualifications:

  • Degree/Diploma/Certificate in Occupational Health & Safety (or in the process of attaining)
  • Previous experience and/or knowledge of Construction Health & Safety
  • Previous work experience in underground utilities and/or construction is an asset
  • Previous experience delivering EHS orientations and safety training
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Strong computer skills
  • Excellent knowledge of Windows, Microsoft Office products (Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint)
