Senior Coordinator/Specialist/Senior Specialist (Permanent)
 
Overall Responsibility:
-Provide leadership and direction in Safety Engineering to help implement and continuously improve H&S systems to support an Accident-Free Workplace. 
-Safety Engineers apply engineering principles to create a safe work environment.  They develop and implement solutions that mitigate risk and fix issues, ideally before they become problematic.
 
Major Responsibilities:
-Projects/Improvement Work
- Lead transformational initiatives in Health & Safety

-Improve safety through application of technology.  
-Evaluate/analyze deficiencies and/or opportunities for engineered safety improvements.
-Establish design parameters, technical requirements and project delivery requirements.
-Evaluate and pilot new technology focused on safety improvements and corporately mandated risk mitigation tactics (Fatality Prevention Standards)
-Apply knowledge/experience in planning and project management to coordinating safety improvements.  Develop business cases, prioritize highest need, and ensure solutions are consistently applied across the organization.  
-Assessnents
– conduct risk assessments to identify risks/hazards and facilitate solution development. Use the hierarchy of controls to eliminate/reduce hazards through design changes and engineered solutions.
-Accident Investigation
– Facilitate/Participate in accident investigations using Root Cause Analysis or similar process to develop appropriate corrective actions and solutions.
-Expertise
- Demonstrate and maintain company and industry expertise in Safety Engineering including  legislation. Communicate relevant H&S information to Stakeholders and support making recommendations for addressing / managing issues.
-Business Areas
- Provide professional guidance and input to business plans. Influence and support the effective application of H&S strategies and resources. 
-Data Analysis
– Use statistical tools to interpret data sets, paying particular attention to trends and patterns that could be valuable for identifying areas of focus and improvement opportunities.
-Internal Stakeholders
- Collaborate and negotiate with key AM Internal Stakeholders including Manufacturing, Technology, Purchasing, Legal and Corporate Affairs to prioritize work and ensure collaborative implementation, delivery and support of Health & Safety requirements.
 
Education & Accreditation:
-Relevant University bachelor’s degree or community college diploma in engineering or automation related technical discipline.
-Preference for professional engineering designation, P.Eng.
 
Knowledge:
-Typically, must have a minimum of 5 years of job-related experience.
-Expertise in the H&S field, the Occupational Health & Safety Act/Regulations and ArcelorMittal Dofasco’s H&S program is an asset.
-Must be able to set technical direction, develop company standards in cooperating with others and plan/facilitate the integration of new technology.
-Must have a good working knowledge of steel production process and internal customers.
-Must have expertise in risk assessment.
-Must be able to review and approve the work of others.

-Must have an advanced level of problem solving and project management skills for managing projects.
-Must be able to communicate effectively with management, employees, and external groups.
-Must have strong facilitation and negotiation skills.
-Must have strong critical thinking skills
-Must demonstrate strong interdependent team building skills, able to work with others to achieve results.
 
Working Environment:
-Office environment requiring up to 70% of time in plant, office/shop floor.
-Required to wear personal protective equipment.
 
Hours of Work:
-Straight days, Monday to Friday with extended hours as required due to periods of peak workloads or business needs.
