Health & Safety Specialist
(Permanent Position)
 
Overall Responsibility:
-Provide leadership and direction to help implement and continuously improve H & S systems to support an Accident-Free Workplace.  Act as company and industry professional in Safety.
 
Major Responsibilities
-BUSINESS AREAS
- Provide professional guidance on a broad range of Health & Safety issues. Provide input to business plans, identify improvement opportunities and facilitate solution development. Influence and support the effective application of H&S strategies and resources.  Provides rotating on-call coverage as part of the H&S department team providing round the clock support to Business Units (typically 1 week every 2 months).
-GOVERNMENT
- Undertake interactions in handling/communicating Health & Safety incidents and interacting/corresponding with Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training & Skills Development on accidents investigations, employees complaints and other inquiries. Provides input and expertise into Government interactions.
-ASSESSMENTS
– conduct risk assessments (HIRA’s) to identify risks/hazards and facilitate solution development.
-ACCIDENT INVESTIGATION
– Facilitate/Participate in accident investigations using Root Cause Analysis or similar process to develop appropriate corrective actions and solutions.
-H&S PROGRAM MAINTENANCE
– Update and support development of the Program Standards, Policy and Job Safe Practices for ArcelorMittal Dofasco.
-EXPERTISE
- Demonstrate and maintain company and industry expertise in the industrial safety field including legislation. Communicate relevant H&S information to Stakeholders and support making recommendations for addressing / managing issues.
-AUDITING
- Conduct H&S management system and compliance audits in all business areas to maintain external certifications and legal compliance.
-PROJECTS/IMPROVEMENT WORK
-  Apply H&S knowledge/experience in planning and performing tasks/projects. 
-DATA ANALYSIS
– Use statistical tools to interpret data sets, paying particular attention to trends and patterns that could be valuable for identifying areas of focus and improvement opportunities.
-INTERNAL STAKEHOLDERS
-  Collaborate and negotiate with key AM Internal Stakeholders including to prioritize work and ensure collaborative implementation, delivery and support of Health & Safety requirements.
 
Knowledge & Skills:
-Must have expertise in the H&S field, the Occupational Health & Safety Act/Regulations.
-Must be able to set technical direction, develop company standards in cooperating with others and plan/facilitate the integration of new technology.
-Must have expertise in risk assessment.
-Must have strong problem solving and project management skills.
-Must be able to communicate effectively with management, employees, government and external industry groups.
-Must have strong facilitation and negotiation skills.
-Must demonstrate strong interdependent team building skills, able to work with others to achieve results.
-Working knowledge of steel production process is an asset
 
Education & Experience:
-Relevant University bachelor’s degree or community college diploma with expertise in the H&S discipline. 
-Ideally, minimum of 7 years of job-related Industrial and/or Construction Safety related experience.
-Professional designation in CRSP, NCSO, CIH, or ROH is considered an asset.
 
Working Environment:
-Office environment requiring up to 70% of time in plant, office/shop floor.
-Required to wear personal protective equipment.
 
Hours of Work
-Straight days, Monday to Friday with extended hours as required due to emergency or business needs.
