Located in the heart of Halifax, Nova Scotia, with an Agricultural Campus in Truro/Bible Hill, Dalhousie is a truly national and international university, with more than half of our almost 21,000 students coming from outside of the province. Our 6,000 faculty and staff foster a vibrant, purpose-driven community, that celebrated 200 years of academic excellence in 2018.

Job Summary
The Faculty of Open Learning and Career Development (OLCD) develops and delivers innovative and diverse lifelong learning experiences for more than 5000 students annually to help them navigate the changing world of learning and work. Reporting to the Director, Educational Development, the Instructional Designer will complete the development and building of new courses and certificates for all program areas and subjects in the Faculty, particularly courses for an online or hyflex delivery modality to provide students with engaging and cohesive learning experiences using the Faculty’s learning management system and other educational technologies.

Key Responsibilities
  • Review the needs analysis and situation analysis conducted prior to the development of a new course to ensure there is adequate information for quality course development. Complete ongoing refresh and maintenance of existing courses and certificates to ensure they remain current.
  • Develop and follow a schedule and work plan for the development and build of each course.
  • Work collaboratively with Instructors and Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) to prepare course blueprints, outlines, learning outcomes, and assessments. Build course shells using the Faculty’s learning management system template. Create individualized course site maps for online courses.
  • Develop complex learning activities with multi-media applications such as Storyline. Experiment with new course builds and activity ideas in a course sandbox. Advise Instructors and SMEs on best practices in making quality videos. Edit recorded video lectures as needed using a variety of video software.
  • Review proposed course content to ensure relevancy and adherence to copyright guidelines. Work with e-textbook publishers to integrate textbook material into the course learning management system.
  • Complete quality control of courses to ensure they meet the Faculty’s standards and to identify best practices, providing feedback as required. Work to complete course development and building work efficiently and cost effectively, while still meeting the Faculty’s quality standards.

Note
The successful applicant will be eligible for hybrid work (combination of in-person work on campus and remote work) as agreed by all parties based on operational requirements and university guidelines.

Dalhousie’s vaccine mandate has been suspended at this time, and employees no longer need to provide proof of full vaccination. However, health and safety risks to our community will continue to be monitored and a vaccine mandate may be reinstated if necessary.

  • Experience in instructional design, curriculum development, multimedia design and/or educational technology.
  • Experience with educational technologies, including learning management systems, design software, video and audio software, and presentation software.
