Across its districts, NSPHA provides more than 11,200 safe, affordable homes as part of its Housing Services to seniors and families. District offices manage the day-to-day operations of Nova Scotia’s housing stock. Their responsibilities include administering tenant applications and placements, collecting rent, resolving tenant issues, and maintaining and repairing properties.

About Our Opportunity

Under the direction of the Maintenance Supervisor, the Maintenance Technician is responsible for carrying out those duties normally associated with the trade(s) in which they became qualified under the Apprenticeship and Tradesman’s Qualifications Act of the Province of Nova Scotia. The incumbent is also required to carry out preventative maintenance to all buildings, appliances, fixtures, utilities, and equipment in accordance with established standards, policies, and procedures.

Primary Accountabilities

• Maintain all building codes, installation requirements and relevant legislation by ensuring all installations, repairs, and maintenance meet the requirements of appropriate codes.
• Monitor, repair and arrange for service, in accordance with applicable building codes and employer’s policy and procedures, fire alarms, fire extinguishers, emergency and exit lighting, lighting and power systems and fixtures, doorbells, and entry intercom systems.
• Install, repair, and maintain any of the following: water treatment equipment, piping, controls, underground storm sanitary and water piping systems, sinks, tubs, toilets, water heaters and/or conditioners, plumbing fixtures, appliances and trim.
• Restore and install finishes such as drywall, including taping and filling, suspended ceilings, barker board, ceramic tile, flooring including tile, sheet-vinyl, stair nosing, and rubber mats.
• Prepare and complete documentation such as work orders, vehicle reports, maintenance logs, inspection reports, and inventory records.
• Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Experience

• Certificate of qualification under the Apprenticeship and Tradesman’s Qualification Act of the Province of Nova Scotia or interprovincial certification (Red Seal Journeyperson certification) in Electrical plus three years’ experience in building and property maintenance or related field.
• Knowledge of residential building technology, basic knowledge of National Building Code and Occupational Health and Safety.
• Basic knowledge of desktop applications such as Microsoft Office.
• Communication skills, both verbal and written and interpersonal skills are required in dealing with tenants, staff, and contractors.
• Possess a valid Nova Scotia Drivers’ License with access to a reliable vehicle for work purposes.

Assets

• Possess valid Emergency First Aid and WHMIS certifications.
• Experience with Yardi Property Management software
