Job description

POSITION OVERVIEW:

Reporting to the Manager, Health, Safety, Security, Emergency Response and Training, the Superintendent, Health, Safety and Security will proactively lead the operational requirements in the development, implementation and review of strategy, policy, procedures, standards and practices relating to health, Safety and Security objectives in a manner which ensures compliance with Provincial and Federal regulations. This position helps drive the operation towards ownership of best practices and behaviours for a secure, safe and healthy work environment.


MAGINO MINE:

Argonaut Gold is a Canadian-based gold producer with a portfolio of operations in North America. Focused on becoming a low-cost, mid-tier gold producer, the Company’s newest gold mine, Magino is expected to become Argonaut’s largest and lowest cost mine. Commercial production at Magino has been achieved, which is the first step in transforming the Company as it enters a pivotal growth stage. The Company also has three additional operating mines including the Florida Canyon mine in Nevada, USA, where it is pursuing potential for redevelopment and additional growth, La Colorada mine in Sonora, Mexico and San Agustin mine in Durango, Mexico.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Working closely with the Manager, develop and facilitate the implementation of safety risk assessment and action plans and safe operating procedures in a manner which meets best practice standards and ensures continuous improvement in the reduction of accident and injury within the mine.
  • Monitor and report on safety performance of the mine and provide recommendations for enhancements and improvements.
  • Drive the development of a culture based on ownership and accountability to increase safety awareness.
  • Work in a collaborative spirit with the leadership team and entire workforce.
  • Prepare weekly and monthly reports.
  • Oversee tracking system for leading and lagging indicators.
  • Promote the implementation of the Magino Health Safety and Security Management Plan and associated programs.
  • Identify, investigate, report and provide input regarding the causes for safety incidents and identify prevention strategies.
  • Lead the internal and external audit requirements and make recommendations for improved performance relating to areas of non-compliance.
  • Provide ongoing training, resources and development for mine personnel relating to best practices in Safety and Security.
  • Ensure compliance with all safety requirements, work site rules and regulations.
  • Ensure knowledge of occupational health and safety regulation and applicable acts and codes is kept current and up to date.
  • Liaise with key contractors, regulatory bodies and industry professionals.
  • Ensure provision of security, inspection, control and monitoring services to effectively secure the Magino mine.
  • Ensure company property is protected against theft and/or damage.
  • Oversee the monitoring and control access to the work site ensuring only authorized personnel enter the premises.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Degree/Diploma in Health and Safety Management.
  • G Class Driver’s License (Required).
  • A minimum of 10 years of experience in a similar role in mining/heavy industry with 5 years of supervisory experience.
  • Demonstrated effective problem solving and decision-making skills.
  • Strong leadership and team building skills with the ability to build positive working relationships with a diverse workforce.
  • A thorough understanding of drug and alcohol testing.
  • Knowledge and understanding of health and safety standards pertaining to legislation and the mining industry in Canada. Ontario experience is highly desirable.
  • Experience writing health and safety policies and procedures.
  • Experience presenting health and safety initiatives and updates to a variety of audiences.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft office (Excel, PowerPoint, Word) is a requirement.
  • Proficiency with health and safety management software is a requirement.
  • Must have excellent verbal and written communication, organizational and conflict resolution skills.
  • Strong time management skills with ability to continually prioritize workload and respond to top priorities with a sense of urgency.
  • Detail-oriented with both the ambition and willingness to dive into the details necessary to accomplish responsibilities and solve problems.
  • Effective leadership and the ability to build a strong team culture.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with all levels of the operation.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with all internal and external stakeholders.
  • Proven track record of quality work and execution of projects and plans.
  • Must be field oriented and able to work in mines and exploration environments.
  • Degree of assertiveness with ability to give direction.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

  • The role is located at the Magino Mine, which is approximately 88 kilometers northeast of Wawa, Ontario, Canada.
  • The ideal candidate for the role will work a rotation of 7 days on and 7 days off (12-hour days). A 14/14 rotation schedule may be considered.
  • Although you will be assigned a work schedule, this is not a guaranteed schedule of hours and your work hours may vary with the needs of the company.
  • Magino promotes a drug and alcohol-free workplace and has adopted a zero-tolerance policy with respect to alcohol or unauthorized drugs on site.
