JOB SUMMARY

The Recreation & Leisure Centre is responsible for the planning, coordinated development, management and implementation of recreation, leisure, therapy and volunteer activities, programs, services and initiatives to the residents of a municipal long term care facility.

Within one of the city’s Long Term Care Facilities (Garry Armstrong, Carleton Lodge, Centre d’accueil Champlain or Peter D. Clark Centre) you are responsible for implementing and facilitating a variety of recreation and leisure opportunities for residents. Duties include designing program tailored plans to resident needs, consulting with the resident, nursing staff, and other medical/professional service providers to ensure programs meet the physical, social, emotional and spiritual needs of residents, with an emphasis on resident safety and engagement.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Completion of 2 year community college diploma in Recreation and Leisure Studies, Therapeutic Recreation, Kinesiology or other related field

Minimum of 1 year of related experience working with seniors, geriatric patients/clients or long-term care residents which includes recreation planning and implementation.

CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENCES

Valid Ontario unrestricted G class driver’s licence (or provincial equivalent) with no more than 6 demerit points accumulated

KNOWLEDGE

  • Planning and implementing programs with a geriatric population
  • Wide range or recreation programs and resources geared to meet the needs of residents with Alzheimer/Dementia and other related disorders
  • Basic knowledge of computer applications
  • Computerized records systems applicable to Long Term Care (RAIMDS)
  • Knowledge of applicable health and safety legislation, including the rights and duties of workers.

COMPETENCIES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Plan, deliver and evaluate activity programs for cognitively impaired, physically frail and normally aged residents in accordance with their individual needs
  • Document resident progress for health record and care plans
  • Contribute to and work effectively as part of an interdisciplinary care team
  • Consult with residents, families, LTC staff and other health care providers to develop tailored, individual and appropriate resident care plans
  • Communicate effectively and professionally, interpersonally and in writing with residents, families, LTC staff and other health providers
  • Adapt to changing requirements and demands

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

  • Language Requirement: Various language requirements, locations may require English only, French only OR Bilingual competencies. Some positions require English oral, reading, and writing. Some positions required French oral, reading and writing.
  • Police Record Check: The successful candidate will be required to complete a Vulnerable Sector Check with the Police Services detachment in their jurisdiction to the City of Ottawa’s satisfaction.; Police record checks completed by a third-party company will not be accepted.
  • Driver’s License Requirement: A valid Ontario unrestricted G class driver’s license (or provincial equivalent) with no more than 6 demerit points accumulated
  • You may initially be paid 95% of your starting rate of pay, in accordance with the collective agreement.; Experience and formal training combined with demonstrated performance and ability may substitute for stipulated academic requirements.; May include some evening and weekend hours to meet training and/or programming requirements.; Must be able to work shifts, weekends and statutory holidays at a variety of locations.
