St. Mary's Gardens is currently seeking a full-time Activity Coordinator to join its Senior Leadership Team. The successful candidate must be energetic, enthusiastic and have an affinity with working with seniors.
Qualifications:
- A diploma or degree in recreation/activation, sociology, gerontology or a certificate in recreation/activation is required. A certificate in management and/or administration is an asset.
- Previous experience working with seniors, preferably in a retirement home setting.
- Empathy for and understanding of the needs of the elderly and / or mentally / physically disabled.
- Demonstrated leadership and organizational/coordination skills, creativity and high motivation is required.
- Ability to work with minimal supervision is required.
- Ability to relate to all levels of staff, the residents and their families with a high degree of patience, tolerance and confidentiality.
- Good communication skills; both oral and written. Good public relation skills.
- Familiarity with community resources is an asset.
- Excellent working knowledge of all Microsoft Office applications is required. A working knowledge of Print Shop software is an asset.
- Familiar with standards set out in the Retirement Homes Act, 2010 (RHA) and the function of the Retirement Homes Regulatory Authority (RHRA).
- Current CPR and First Aid certification is required.
- Smart Serve certification is required.
- Free from communicable diseases.
- Priority will be given to candidates who are bilingual in French and English.
- Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Screening and 2 Step TB test is required.
Physical Demands:
- Sitting for long periods at a desk for computer/typing work
- Standing for long periods of time during events, activities
- Walking short distances and up/down staircases.
- Dexterity required for typing and/or use of a computer keyboard proficiently
- Pulling/pushing/lifting to relocate furniture, gaming pieces, etc. up to 50lbs
- Reading/seeing documentation both papered and on a computer screen for long periods of time
- Hearing differences in phone ring tones and/or in fire system horns or alerts for emergency response purposes
- Speaking/communicating in front of audiences and to individuals with impairments and disabilities for long periods of time.
- Bending, kneeling, providing walking support for residents where required
- Hand/eye coordination required to play games with Residents
Tasks & Responsibilities:
- Develop, implement and evaluate leisure activity programs and services to meet the physical, mental and spiritual needs of all residents and tenants.
- Assist the Administrator with move in activities and orientation of new residents.
- Complete an assessment for each new resident pertaining to social history, physical ability and behaviours, spiritual lifestyle, important family members and losses, family dynamics and contacts and language abilities.
- Provide ongoing documentation of resident progress and changing needs by conducting one on one interviews.
- Manage the departmental budget, maintain activity records and provide monthly reconciliation of Activity Petty Cash to the Administrator and Autumnwood.
- Maintain all resident records according to ORCA and RHA standards.
- Complete all monthly reports as required by the Administrator and policy.
- Conduct performance appraisals, hire/terminate, schedule, train and mentor the Activity Assistant (when applicable).
- Coordinate and implement the Volunteer program.
- Participate in the orientation, training, scheduling, education and development and recruitment of activity students and volunteers.
- Coordinate a volunteer thank you event during Volunteer Awareness Month.
- Hold all compulsory events as listed in Autumnwood’s annual list of compulsory events.
- Provide special event projected and actual budgets for the Administrator’s approval.
- ·Organize and participate in fundraising activities that benefit the activity program.
- Ensure residents are given a wide array of activity choices including the following:
o Arts & Crafts, Music events, Happy hour, A variety of exercises, Cognitive exercises, Educational functions, Library services, Therapeutic recreation, Intergenerational activities, Religious and Spiritual activities, Community events.
- Plan, organize and submit to the Lead Activity Coordinator for approval, a monthly activity calendar offering a variety of choices, as listed above.
- Ensure residents are given the opportunity to participate in at least four to nine varied activities each day.
- Introduce new activities on a regular basis.
- Ensure all residents are asked to participate in some sort of activity each month.
- Provide opportunities to involve residents in the planning, provision and evaluation of scheduled monthly activities.
- Implement and lead, with the assistance of volunteers, residents and other resources, the monthly activity and events schedule.
- Initiate new and innovative activities/events on a monthly basis.
- Regularly evaluate the success of the activities by seeking resident feedback using satisfaction surveys or other benchmarks determined collaboratively with the Administrator.
- Coordinate the involvement of community groups, entertains, school groups, community resources etc.
- Promote the activity program and the facility through planning, organizing, writing and publishing of a monthly activities calendar, newsletters and coverage of events by local newspapers etc.
- Post monthly activity calendars throughout the residence.
- Create an enjoyable, relaxed and entertaining environment in the residence and assume responsibility for the morale and well-being of residents.
- Communicate with each resident on a regular basis.
- Facilitate the activities of the Resident’s Council were appropriate.
- Maintain positive relationships with community organizations.
- Invite community organizations to use our facility as a resource.
- Create and deliver flyers, posters, invitations etc. to residents, family members and outside contacts for special events as appropriate.
- Work with the Manager of Food Services to co-ordinate menus for special events.
- Manage the delivery of local newspapers to resident subscribers (when applicable).
- Participate in conferences and instructional courses.
- Participate as an active member of the Senior Leadership Team (SLT) regarding resident services and facility operations
- Participate in weekly SLT meetings.
- Complete all other tasks as assigned.
