Your opportunity:
The New Science Building (NSB) is slated to open in early 2024. Across multiple floors it will encompass 200,000 ft2 of primarily wet laboratories, offices and meeting spaces. The building will house researchers from Biology and Chemical & Physical Sciences departments, provide growth for the Forensic Sciences program and the Centre for Medicinal Chemistry, host emerging ventures in SpinUp, and expand core research facility offerings.
The incumbent will oversee day-to-day operational needs for this new building’s core and shared research spaces, and SpinUp; work in collaboration with Facilities Management & Planning team and other units on campus; lead ordering of consumables, supplies and equipment through fostering strong connections with external vendors; provide training for users; and, oversee safety protocols.
Your responsibilities will include:
-Overseeing day-to-day operational needs for one or more labs/workshops
-Troubleshooting issues with lab equipment and/or workstations
-Liaising with course instructors to coordinate experiment set-up to compliment theoretical material
-Performing lab experiments that requires great precision and attention to many details
-Providing safety training and ensuring compliance to lab safety procedures and standards
-Scheduling and assigning work to a small group in a limited area
-Serving as a resource on specific issues to a group of specialists
 
Essential Qualifications:
-Master's Degree in Life Sciences or Chemistry or acceptable combination of equivalent experience.
-Minimum four years of recent and related experience coordinating Life Sciences or Chemistry research laboratories and their operations, preferably in an academic postsecondary environment
-Experience with overseeing day-to-day operations of a research lab, scheduling resources, tracking inventory, ordering supplies, coordinating equipment maintenance, troubleshooting technical issues
-Demonstrated experience with developing, modifying, testing and setting up laboratory experiments
-Strongknowledge of University’s Environmental Health & Safety Program, Policies, Procedures and Guidelines, and experience with providing safety training and ensuring compliance to lab safety procedures and standards
-Ability to demonstrate and explain lab techniques, experimental procedures and protocols to students, lab personnel, faculty, and other users
-Experience developing manuals and procedure documents for a research lab.
-Advanced skills in Microsoft Office Suite, includingOutlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Experience with database management systems and editing applications for text, images, audio and video files
-Ability to foster and maintain effective relationships with individuals at all levels, and work effectively in a highly collaborative and consultative environment with faculty, course instructors, sessional lecturers, teaching assistants and other laboratory technicians

This role is currently eligible for a hybrid work arrangement, pursuant to University policies and guidelines, including but not limited to the University of Toronto's Alternative Work Arrangement Guideline.
This is a 12 month term appointment with a possibility of extension.
