As a Tax Services Advisor, your role encompasses responding to customer service inquiries and resolving issues for taxpayers and authorized representatives. This involves conducting extensive research and, when necessary, coordinating activities with partner business units. Primary duties include:
- Address inquiries regarding property tax and payments toward the tax account.
- Provide tax documents such as a statement of account, copy of the tax bill, and payment receipts.
- Interpret and explain legislation and bylaws related to property taxation.
- Create and review Tax Instalment Payment Plan (TIPP) applications and agreements.
- Review financial transactions including penalties and service charges, investigating payment details as well as preparing worksheets with the necessary backup data and information.
- Initiate adjustments on misdirected payments and refund requests which are in the best interest of The City of Calgary and taxpayers.
- Research discrepancies with property information between Alberta Land Titles and different Business Units within the City of Calgary.
- Review tax exemptions and relief through Property Tax Assistance and the AB Senior Deferral Program.
- Provide billing details for Local Improvement and Clean Energy Improvements applied to tax accounts.
- Offer advice to taxpayers on how to prevent tax recovery notifications/tax sale of their properties.
- A completed High School diploma or equivalency (For example: GED).
- At least 5 years of experience in an office and customer service environment.
- The experience must include at least 2 years working with the public in a similar problem-solving capacity involving interaction with the public in person, in writing, and by phone.
- An intermediate proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word and Outlook) with strong typing skills.
- Previous working experience in a politically sensitive environment is preferred.
- You have well-developed communication and interpersonal and organizational skills, diplomacy, proven problem-solving ability, political sensitivity, and the ability to manage public impressions.
- A security clearance will be conducted.
