The Canmore Nordic Centre (CNC) is an internationally recognized venue for biathlon, cross country skiing, mountain biking and trail running. This recognition results in a high demand for event access to the site. Events range in scope from Olympic level international competitions to local not-for profit races. The prominence of this site also drives high interest in private guiding, filming, and volunteerism at the site.


Role Responsibilities

The CNC Events Coordinator is primarily responsible for the planning, coordination and permitting events, guiding and filming within Canmore Nordic Centre Provincial Park (CNCPP). In addition, this position is responsible for leading and coordinating the volunteer programs within this Provincial Park.


The Events Coordinator liaises between event organizers and the CNC Trails and Snowmaking Team, Site Operations Team, and Visitor Services Team to provide seamless events within Canmore Nordic Centre Provincial Park. Reporting to the Area Manager of Specialized Facilities and Commercial Tourism, the Events Coordinator provides guidance and direction to various event organizers on all aspects of event planning and permitting. The position is critical in ensuring the Canmore Nordic Centre is accessible for local, provincial, national and international users as a world-class competitive facility.


The Events Coordinator also participates on the CNC Leadership Team and liaises between event organizers and the CNC Trails and Snowmaking Team, Site Operations Team, and Visitor Experience Team to provide seamless events within Canmore Nordic Centre Provincial Park.


You will also provide volunteer leadership and coordination to our Direct to Crown volunteers and to volunteer agencies at the Canmore Nordic Centre. Some examples include assisting with the coordination of the Friends of Kananaskis, Canmore and Area Mountain Bike Alliance, Bow Valley Stewards Volunteer Program, the Inclusion Program in partnership with Settlement Services, WildSmart and Trail Sports.



This position is also responsible for the review and issuance of filming and guiding permits within CNCPP. This work involves site commercial partner engagement and coordination as well as clear communication between enforcement agencies, local not-for profit clubs, private instructors, filming agencies, guiding outfitters and Kananaskis Permitting staff.

The ideal candidate has exceptional communication and organizational skills, a passion for the events and activities held at the CNC and demonstrated skills and experience with running large scale national and international events.

This position involves regular weekend and overtime work to support events as required.

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • Degree in a related field such as Public Administration, Hospitality and Tourism, Public Administration. In some cases, an equivalent combination of education (diploma or certificate) and experience may be accepted when there is direct experience with event management, or permitting processes and experience managing complex and competing interests; equivalencies of one year of education for one year of experience or one year of experience for one year of education will be considered.
  • Minimum recruitment standards outline the minimum education and experience required for appointment to a job classification.

Additional Assets:

  • Strong Microsoft Office computer skills; additional experience with corporate finance, procurement, HR and payroll systems
  • Strong knowledge of sport specific requirements for hosting International, National and Provincial Nordic Ski, Biathlon and Mountain Bike Events
  • High level of experience coordinating major events and issuing Filming and Guiding Permits
  • Excellent human relations and communications skills for direct interaction with event organizers, key stakeholders, volunteers, the public and colleagues resulting in efficient organization of events and programs
  • Knowledge of CNCPP trails, facilities, complex ecology and regional terrain
  • Experience working with Direct to Crown volunteers and volunteer agencies including policy and procedures development and Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) requirements
  • Knowledge of ATV, Snow Machine, and related equipment use and Class 5 Driver's License
  • Wilderness/Advanced First Aid Certification (not mandatory) to support Event and CNC medical assistance

This position is a full-time, permanent position of 36.25 hours/week and will typically require work on weekends and occasional evenings.
