Position Summary
The City of Fort Saskatchewan is seeking an ambitious, proactive, and customer service focused professional to join our People Services Team. Reporting to the Director of People Services, the Health and Safety Advisor is responsible for conducting regular evaluation and revisions as required of the City’s Safety Management Plan, SOP’s, and policies.
Responsibilities
- Ensure that all departments have the information and support they need to carry out their responsibilities for health and safety while adhering to legislative requirements to ensure City compliance.
- Facilitate the implementation and administration of Health and Safety policies, procedures, and systems, monitor compliance with all relevant legislation, rules, and regulations.
- Provide support and mentorship for those conducting or required to perform hazard assessments, safety inspections and incident investigations.
- Collaborate with departments to ensure staff competency and professional development requirements are quantified and tracked.
- Investigate incidents, near misses, and hazardous conditions that occur in the workplace, as required.
- Act as the City’s primary contact with WCB and co-ordinate claims management and rehabilitation services and develop and implement return to work / modified work programs as required.
- Performs various levels of worksite inspections and audits and follows through with appropriate levels of coaching and support for all corrective actions, as required.
- Conduct periodic reviews upon Vendor safety process and perform safety inspections upon vendor activities to ensure compliance to the Alberta Occupational Health & Safety Act, Regulation and Code, Alberta Environmental Standards.
- Participate and contribute with ongoing procedural, policy and other documentation development and updates as required.
- Lead, guide and mentor employees on City specific policies, procedures, and standards.
- Maintain knowledge of current Health and Safety strategies, trends, and technologies.
- Encourages and promotes a safe work culture with a positive attitude and team approach.
- Participate as a member of the City’s Joint Occupational Health and Safety Committee.
Qualifications
This position requires the completion of a Diploma or Degree in Occupational Health and Safety, as well as a Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) certification. Intermediate First Aid and an Alberta Class 5 driver’s license is mandatory. A minimum of 5 years of health and safety experience is required. Experience in a municipal environment is considered an asset. Excellent communication, interpersonal skills, and the ability to provide leadership that generates safe work attitudes and practices among staff while meeting the legislated requirements of the organization is essential. The successful candidate will have experience with Vendor safety management within a Contracting Employer and/or Prime Contractor role. Working within a structure that includes Human Resources activities is considered an asset.
