Reporting to the Manager, Workplace Strategy in Operational Excellence for the Operational Services (OS) department, this position will lead the team responsible for the sustainment and continuous improvement of the departmental Strategic Safety Framework, OS Safety Governance Framework, and the development and implementation of OS-wide safety programs and initiatives.

This position will work closely with operational Business Units (BUs) and corporate partners to advance and improve the Health & Safety culture and overall employee wellness in OS. Primary duties include:

  • Provide leadership and development (coaching, mentoring) to Safe Workplace Coordinator and department team members, and foster an inclusive and psychologically safe team culture.
  • Build and sustain strong strategic relationships with key partners in OS business units, corporate enabling partners, and departmental senior leaders. Create shared understanding and clarity around roles and responsibilities related to health, safety and wellness.
  • Coordinate, support and advance the work of the OS Department Safety Committee. This includes establishing priorities, developing workplans, facilitating monthly meetings and actioning emerging initiatives.
  • Build an understanding of BU safety priorities and support the alignment of BU safety workplans to the departmental strategic vision and corporate partner priorities.
  • Understand and map the OS safety system to identify gaps, risks, and opportunities. Advance strategies to manage risks.
  • Collaborate with individuals and teams across the department and corporation to ensure alignment with health and safety related rollouts and programs. Includes Corporate Health, Safety and Wellness Month, Safety Summits, Code of Conduct, and related policies, as well as concurrent communication and safety initiatives.
  • Partner with Communications to develop simple yet innovative ways to convey key messages and stories to reinforce physically and psychologically safe workplaces within different work areas in OS.
  • Champion the work of the Safe Workplace Program and advocate for departmental safety frameworks and approach using change leadership best practices.
  • Collaborate with partners to continue to build clarity around roles and responsibilities.
  • Facilitate departmental health and safety committees and communities of practice focused on advancing safety priorities and culture.
  • Work with Workforce Strategy team members and partners to access relevant data, reporting and training to support program metrics and performance.
  • Use innovative and strategic approaches to advance and improve the OS safety system.
 
Qualifications 
  • A degree in Business, Health & Safety, Human Resources, Communications, or related field with at least 8 years of relevant experience.
  • Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.
  • Experience building a team and leading people with a focus on inclusion and fostering psychological safety.
  • Well-developed facilitation and presentation skills are necessary.
  • Proven experience leading or supporting major change initiatives and managing complex projects in a large corporate setting would be considered an asset.
  • Knowledge and experience of relevant City lines of service and operations, project management, and leadership development will be considered an asset.
  • Strong interpersonal and political acumen skills are required with the ability to effectively collaborate with internal and external partners, and influence without authority.
  • The applicant must have the ability to build relationships, credibility, and trust.
  • Innovative, strategic, and ability to thrive and lead others in uncertain and complex conditions.

Position Type: 1 Temporary ( up to 24 months)
Location: 800 Macleod Trail S.E.
Compensation: Level F $94,168 - 144,228 per annum
Days of Work: This position works a 5 day
work week earning 1 day off in a 3 week cycle.
Hours of work: Standard 35 hour work week
