The KOOTENAY BOUNDARY REGION team provides expert advice and decision support relating to multiple business areas in the region. The primary duties of the First Nations Relations Advisor are centered on conducting consultations for the use of natural resources on Crown land and determining the impact on First Nations’ interests.
A skilled and effective written and verbal communicator, you communicate with First Nations on natural resource applications and liaise with ministry staff as an expert on the legal and procedural requirements of First Nations consultation. A collaborative approach is crucial to this role as you successfully establish and maintain productive working relationships with a wide variety of contacts from: First Nations, industry, contractors, environmental agencies, stakeholders and provincial and federal agencies.
First Nations Relations Advisor manages the planning and facilitation of the First Nations consultation process (i.e., preparation, engagement, accommodation, decision and follow-up) and participates in negotiations and projects to meet B.C.s reconciliation objectives with First Nations.

Job Requirements:
Education and Experience:
- Diploma related to the natural resource sector (e.g., forestry, resource management, agrology, environmental science etc.) or equivalent; OR
- An equivalent combination of related education and experience may be considered.
- Experience working in the areas of land use and natural resource management. Experience participating in multiple concurrent projects, independently or in teams within time and resource constraints.
Preference may be given to qualified applications who have:
- Experience leading and resolving complex issues, both staff and client.
- More than one (1) year experience leading consultation with First Nations. At least one (1) year experience working with indigenous communities.

About this Position:
Flexible work options are available, this position may be able to work up to 2 days at home per week subject to an approved Telework Agreement.
