The Salvation Army London Village has been an integral part of the London community since 1954 providing excellence in care to families in need. The London Village offers a variety of programs to meet the diverse needs of families including a Childcare Centre, Respite Program for individuals with intellectual disabilities and Adult Day Program for seniors. Our program site sits on 9 ½ acres of beautiful green space and offers a gymnasium, pool, pavilion and playground equipment for everyone to enjoy. The Adult Day Program is a specialized day service for seniors with Alzheimer’s and related forms of dementia and those with medical fragility looking for social engagement opportunities while providing a break to their family care providers. The environment is secure and homelike while offering personal supports such as: personal care & hygiene and therapeutic recreational, social, educational opportunities and special event programs.

The Adult Day Program is currently hiring a Recreation Coordinator Position. This is a Permanent Full-time position and works 35 hours per week Monday to Saturday with a rotational work schedule set by your Supervisor. Hours are 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and include a 1/2 hour paid meal break where applicable. Some flexibility in scheduling is required to meet program needs. This position is for someone that has a passion for and takes initiative in supporting in areas such as: personal care & hygiene, advocacy, and empowering each person we support to remain active, independent, and socially engaged.

The Recreation Coordinator is responsible to facilitate recreation programming & respectfully engage with seniors in person and/or virtually ensuring a positive & enjoyable client experience.

The Recreation Coordinator will implement and evaluate age appropriate therapeutic recreational, social, educational, and special event programs which incorporates the needs, interests, and preferences of clients through group program interventions.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Clients Services:

  • Perform recreation assessments to identify clients’ former and current leisure recreational interests and establish their ability to participate in leisure/recreational activities.
  • Establish individual goals for participants and document actions on client care plan.
  • Participate in the client reassessment process, review past goals and actions, report new goals/plans, and inform team of changes in level of participation.
  • Plan, develop, implement, and evaluate a variety of leisure recreational activities, which are based on identified client needs and interests.
  • Engage clients in individual, small, and large group opportunities, which correspond to the identified leisure needs and interests.
  • Ensure the safety of the clients while involved in leisure/recreational activities both inside and outside of the building.
  • Involve clients/primary care partners in the evaluation of service delivery.
  • Assist or facilitate as required with the safe arrival and departure of participants.
  • Perform room set up and facility cleaning routines daily.
  • Decorate building seasonally and in celebration of special events.
  • Support participants and provide washroom, ambulation, and feeding assistance as required.
  • Assist program staff during staff absences for meal and comfort breaks.
  • Other duties as requested by the Director and/or Supervisor.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • This is a permanent full-time position based on 35 hours per week.
  • The Supervisor will set the hours of work and work schedule.
  • Flexibility in scheduling is required to meet program need; schedule includes days and weekends.
  • Eligible for Group Insurance benefits and Group Registered Retirement Savings Plan.
  • Ability to lift/move up to 50 lbs. and apply effective body mechanics and meet the physical demands of the position.
  • Frequent lifting, twisting, bending, crouching, reaching, pushing, and pulling, walking, and standing for long period; some kneeling, running may be required.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Completion of a College Diploma in Therapeutic Recreation or related area of study.
  • Current Gentle Persuasive Approach training and Safe Food Handling Certification preferred.
  • Current Standard First Aid & CPR Certification required.
  • Montessori for Dementia Care certificate would be an asset.
  • U-First Training would be an asset.
  • Alternative combinations of education and experience may be considered.

EXPERIENCE AND KNOWLEDGE:

  • Minimum of one (1) year of prior work experience working with cognitively impaired/frail elderly populations.

SKILLS AND CAPABILITIES:

  • Bilingual in French is preferred, other languages an asset.
  • Proficiency in all Microsoft Office products is required - i.e. Word, Excel, Publisher, PowerPoint, Email and Internet etc.
  • Musical skills are an asset.
  • Demonstrate effective working relationships within a team environment and a willingness to work collaboratively with other staff, volunteers, and members of the London Village.
  • Lead by example, by demonstrating a strong work ethic and a willingness to learn and be flexible in the face of change to meet community expectations & funding obligations.
  • Ability to maintain information in confidence and exercise good judgement.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and participate as an active and responsible team member in a cooperative team environment.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, integrity, and adaptability.
  • Exhibit good listening skills, have strong oral/written communication skills and respect authority.
  • Participate in mandatory orientation training, on-going professional development, and training.
  • Participate in regular supervision and performance appraisal processes.
  • Fluent French verbal and written communication skills are an asset.
  • Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army’s health and safety policies and procedures.
  • Represent the organization in a positive, professional, and engaging manner.
  • Must comply with all Salvation Army policies, procedures, and associated legislation.
  • Treat the property of The Salvation Army with due care and caution.
  • Ability to undergo applicable screening and background checks successfully that are satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion (i.e., The Salvation Army Abuse Registry) and provide an original copy of a Background Check with vulnerable sector screening.
  • Ability and willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities.
