As the Chief Pilot, you will provide leadership and direction to the Air Support unit ensuring safe and effective support to the members of the Calgary Police Service (CPS) and the citizens of Calgary. You will maintain awareness of emerging trends affecting the aviation operations of Air Support Unit. Primary duties include ensure the development and continued professional training and expertise of the leaders and teams; develop, administer and review operating procedures in accordance with the Canadian Aviation Regulations (CARS) to ensure a safe and effective aviation unit; assist with the annual budgets both capital and operations; perform flying duties on CPS aircrafts.


 
 
Working Conditions: This position is required to work in both an office and flying duty environment of 80 hours per 2 weeks.  There is an expectation to Overtime or Call Out subject to the CPS current Policies and procedures.  There is a requirement for computer usage for long periods on a regular basis.  There may be exposure to noise, chemicals, fumes and temperature variations on a regular basis. There is a requirement to work outdoors while accompanying the aircraft off-site.  Travel is required for maintaining currency and qualifications as laid down by current Canadian Aviation Regulations CARS and CPS policy and procedures.
 
Qualifications 
  • A valid and current Canadian Commercial Helicopter Pilots Licence (CPL(H) or ATPL(H)).
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid Class 5 Driver¿s Licence (or provincial equivalent).
  • A valid and current Canadian Aeronautical Radio License; and a valid and current Canadian Category 1 Medical Certificate.
  • A minimum of 3,000 hours of flying time as Pilot in Command (Helicopter), of which 250 hours shall be acquired within the preceding 3 years. Aviation accident and incident free.
  • Experience in Aviation/Industry Safety Management; strong piloting skills; ability to maintain a policy of constant improvement are required.
  • Thorough knowledge of the Canadian Aviation Regulations and Standards, Aviation Regulations Training Standards and electronic aviation systems, equipment, and programs are required.
  • A Canadian valid and current Group IV Instrument Rating would be considered an asset.
  • A valid and current Canadian Helicopter Night Rating with a minimum of 20 hours PIC night experience would be considered an asset.
  • An (AS350) Aircraft Type Rating Endorsement, with current experience (within the past 12 months) on the H125 variant would be considered an asset.
  • Be Advanced NVG (NVIS) Qualified and current would be considered an asset.
  • Knowledge of the Calgary area, for example; aeronautical, geographical, weather and experience flying in busy controlled airspace would be considered an asset.
  • Experience as a pilot in Police Aviation, flight training or helicopter instructor rating, previous experience as a Chief Pilot and/or Operations Manager, would be considered an asset.

Pre-employment Requirements 
  • An enhanced security clearance and pre-employment polygraph will be conducted.
  • Applicants will be tested for appropriate skills.
  • Applicants must pass the Calgary Police Service Air Support Unit rotary wing training syllabus.
  • Complete and pass an Instrument Proficiency Flight (IPC) or Instrument Flight Check in accordance with the Calgary Police Air Support Unit NVG operating procedures depending on qualifications.
  • Successful applicants must provide proof of qualifications. Education obtained from out of country must have or be able to obtain, an Education Credential Assessment (ECA) for confirmation of equivalent credentials.

Location: 133-6th Ave S.E.
Compensation: $146,181.60 per annum
Days of Work: This is a dayshift position: 4 days per week
at 10 hours per shift. There is an expectation to cover operational
shifts when needed which consist of: 2 days. 2 night, and 4 days
off. Shifts vary from 11 hours to 11.5 hours per shift.
Hours of work: Non-standard 40 hour work week
